​Dr Alex Barnes is a consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist. He has a special interest in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and bowel cancer surveillance. Other interests include endoscopy, colonoscopy and irritable bowel syndrome.

Dr Barnes trained at Flinders Medical Centre and the Royal Adelaide Hospital, completing an IBD fellowship at Flinders Medical Centre where he currently practices, and has academic status at Flinders University. He previously trained and worked as a mechatronic engineer. Dr Barnes has completed a Masters of Public Health and is currently completing his PhD which examines the significance of sleep disorders in people with IBD. His research can be found here.  ​

Dr Barnes is a member of SA Group of Specialists and consults at Flinders Private Hospital, Seaford Day Surgery, Russell Clinic and Western Hospital. He performs endoscopic procedures at Flinders Private Hospital, Seaford Day Surgery, Western Hospital and Victor Harbour Hospital.  ​

Patients with polyps or a family history of bowel cancer will be enrolled into a bowel cancer surveillance program (SCOOP) to ensure evidence based bowel cancer surveillance and recall.

Dr Barnes also enrols patients into the Barrett's oesophagus surveillance program (BOSS).  

Dr Barnes is a member of IBD-SA - a dedicated private IBD service with specialised gastroenterologists, surgeons, psychologists, dieticians, radiologists and IBD nurses.
